Obituary of Larry Hamby
Larry Allen Hamby, 73, husband of Dianne Howard Hamby for 42 years, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Hamby was born in Greenville to the late Grady Isaac Hamby and Laura Mae Babb Hamby. He was a Vietnam veteran of the US Army. Larry was a graduate of Greenville Technical College and retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, riding ATVs, and his beagles Jack and Josie. Larry’s greatest joy came in being “Big L” to his grandsons.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Laura McLeod with husband Malcolm; a brother, Dan Hamby; a sister-in-law, Jeannie Hamby; two grandsons, Mac McLeod and Chapman McLeod; a niece, Holly; and a great-niece, Olivia. He was predeceased by his beloved mother-in-law, Beulah Howard; a nephew, Ted Hamby; and dear cousin, Jerry Hamby.
A Celebration of Larry’s Life, with Military Honors, will be 10 o’clock Tuesday at Clear Spring Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be private and be in Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
