Obituary of Gary McQueen

Please share a memory of Gary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Walter Gary McQueen, 86, husband of Mildred Isabell Styles McQueen for 65 years, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Mr. McQueen was born in Greenville to the late Walter Marshall McQueen and Alma Blanche Campbell McQueen.  He was a member of Roper Mountain Baptist Church where he served many times as a deacon.  Gary retired from C.F. Sauer Company after more than 30 years of service.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking.  He reveled in being known as Mr. Fix-It, but his greatest joy came in being Papa to his grandchildren.  Gary was a collector of hats and pocket knives and was a USC Gamecock through and through.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Eric McQueen with wife Lynn; a daughter, Elaine Tennes with husband Gene; two grandchildren, Rachel Yoder with husband Robert, and Caleb Tennes with wife Abby; and five great-grandchildren, Tillman Yoder, Jones Yoder, Fields Yoder, Colton Tennes and Carter Tennes.  He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward McQueen and Lanny McQueen; and two sisters, Marlene Altom and Jan Williams.

A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be 2 o’clock Monday at Roper Mountain Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Roper Mountain Baptist Church, 300 Roper Mountain Road Ext., Greenville, SC 29615.

Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kelly Johnson with Amedysis Hospice and the staff of The Cascades.  Your love and care of Gary during his last days with us will forever be cherished.
