Obituary of Jennings Cudd

Please share a memory of Jennings to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jennings Weldon Cudd, 97, husband of his late wife of 70 years Margie Hudson Cudd, was taken home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, August 13, 2024. He died at his home in the Cashville Community, where he had lived since 1950.

Mr. Cudd was born in Greer to the late Weldon Cudd and Virgie Smith Cudd. Jennings and Margie co-owned and operated Hudson’s Grocery in Cashville for many years, after his father-in-law, Reid Hudson, retired. The store and the ones who ran it were an integral part of the community since 1945.  He was a member of Devenger Road Presbyterian Church, but had been unable to attend for several years.  Jennings was a lifetime member of the Reidville Masonic Lodge.

Jennings was a WWII veteran of the US Army, attaining the rank of SGT and serving as a Squad Leader.  On his 18th birthday, he was a Soldier guarding POW’s.  He was in the process of transferring duty stations to Japan during the conclusion of the war.  For his service, he was a recipient of the WWII Victory Medal and the Occupation of Germany Medal, among other medals and awards.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Malphrus with husband Phillip, and Reida Pearson with husband Gary; a son, Jimmy Cudd with wife Pamela; two sisters, Betty Jean Kelly and Ruthel Godfrey; five grandchildren, Phillip Malphrus, Jr. with wife Katie, Amanda M. Moore with husband Stuart, Patrick Malphrus with wife Amanda, Kate Pearson and Victoria Cudd; and two great-granddaughters, Isabella Malphrus and Anna Kathryn Moore.  He was predeceased by four sisters, Joan Cudd, Mae Hughes, Gaynell Miller and Aileen McClimon; and two brothers, Bennett Cudd and Billy Cudd.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 o’clock Thursday at Fletcher Funeral Service – Woodruff, and between 3 – 3:45 PM Friday at Selma Baptist Church.

A Celebration of Jennings’ Life will be held at 4 o’clock Friday, August 16th, at Selma Baptist Church, officiated by his grandson, the Rev. Patrick Malphrus, of Steeles Tavern, VA, and the Rev.
