William D (Bill) Mayfield passed away on June 26, 2017 at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born September 15, 1939 in Simpsonville, South Carolina to Wilton W Mayfield and Cassie Leora King Mayfield. William married Thelma Poore in 1960 and they had two daughters, Teresa Ann Mayfield and Kimberly Mayfield Feinberg. He was a devoted father spending time with his family especially on annual vacations to the beach. He later married Joyce Robinson and became step-father to her children Allen Robinson and Kim Robinson Barron.
He is survived by children Teresa Mayfield, Kimberly Feinberg (Ross), Kim Barron and Allen Robinson; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Polly Mayfield Cooper (Jerry), many nieces and nephews and his faithful dog Rambo.
He began his career at Cryovac (W.R.Grace) upon graduation from Simpsonville High School and progressed through the company into management positions becoming one of Cryovac’s most trusted quality troubleshooters. William, or Bill as he was known to most work colleagues, spent many weeks traveling to customers within and outside the United States solving production problems for the company he was devoted to - Cryovac. When he wasn’t working for Cryovac, he was working with his father and brother-in-law farming cotton and soybeans in and around Simpsonville.
William loved to hunt - mostly deer but also birds. He belonged to the Palmetto Sportsman Hunt Club and hunted with them for years in the lower part of the state.
Once he retired, William began his second career as an antique dealer - he formed the business Mayflower Antiques with his wife Joyce and two friends and learned everything he could about antique furniture, glassware, toys, farm equipment, etc. He could frequently be found on Friday and Saturday nights in his front row seat at Backwoods Auction in Pelzer, where he spent many years developing and sharing his knowledge of antiques.
William was baptized and raised in Clear Spring Baptist Church and later attended Simpsonville First Freewill Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank his long time caregivers and friends David Sullivan and Goldie Durham. Donations in memory to Patriot Hospice of Greenville or Wounded Warriors appreciated.
In Loving Memory
William Mayfield
