Obituary of Robert Reeve Bennett, Jr.
Robert Reeve Bennett, Jr., formerly of Northfield, NH passed away in Simpsonville, SC on August 12, 2018. Mr. Bennett was born in Brooklyn, NY to Robert Reeve Bennett, Sr. and Viola Rumph Bennett. At the age of 11, the family moved to Northfield where Bob grew up on the Bennett farm on Bean Hill Road. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Class of 1950 at Tilton-Northfield High School. One week following graduation Bob enlisted in the US Air Force. Most of his enlistment was served in Germany and England. In 1952 while stationed in London, Bob met and married Elizabeth Evans of Wales. They were the parents of a “third” Bob Bennett and a daughter Kathie. They were married for 28 years.
Following his service to his country, Mr. Bennett returned to Northfield and began his career in road construction, working for several prominent paving contractors in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He was active in local politics, serving two terms as a Selectman for the town of Northfield.
In 1975 the family moved to Terrapin Crossing in Six Mile, SC. Planning on retirement, he realized he missed what he enjoyed the most: road work. He returned to the workforce and was employed with several paving and grading firms in the upstate. His final employer was King Asphalt Inc. who he served until the age of 80.
In 1984 Bob met and married Genevieve Gregory “Miss Ginny”. They shared 33 wonderful years together until her passing in 2017. They loved living in Simpsonville on a quiet street with wonderful neighbors. We would like to thank all the neighbors who helped Bob and Ginny through their final years. A special thanks to Darlene and Harold Alverson, who became like family to Bob and Ginny.
Like his father, Bob was proud to become a Free Mason. He was a member of AFM Lodge 339 of Six Mile. Bob was blessed to have several wonderful dogs through his life to love and be loved by. His last dog, Joy, was his constant companion and napping buddy until passing in 2017.
Mr. Bennett was predeceased by his parents in 1967 and 1968 and his wife Genevieve in 2017. Survivors include his son, Bob and his wife, Terri of Brevard, NC; his daughter, Kathie Hill and her husband Vicente of Asheville, NC; step-daughters, Kathi Gregory of Atlanta, GA and Teresa Gregory of Greenville, SC; a sister, Elizabeth Schofield of Kennebunk, ME; grandsons, Robert Reeve Bennett and family of Greer, SC, John Evan Bennett and family of Lake Wylie, SC; granddaughter, Elizabeth Maldonado of Asheville, NC; step granddaughters, Tessa and Teagan Hill of Asheville, NC; and step grandson, Chip Sullivan of Pickens SC; as well as five great grandchildren.
The graveside service for Mr. Bennett will be held at 1pm on Friday August 17th in the mausoleum chapel at Graceland East Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Memorials may be made to Meals-On-Wheels, 15 Oregon Street, Greenville, SC 29605.
