Ms. Bertie Lee Woods, 88, of Greenville, SC passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019 surrounded by her family. She was born in Ridgeland, SC to the late French R. and Nona P. Malphrus. She is pre-deceased by three siblings, Louise Malphrus Baker, Ellen Malphrus Langford and French Collins Malphrus.

She is survived by her two sons and daughter, Thomas Richard Woods, Jr., George Allen Woods (Landace), and Sara Woods McConnell; two siblings, Margaret M. Davis (Coleman), and Gen Malphrus (Kay); five Grandchildren, Nicholas E. Woods, Lindsay R. Woods, Landon M. Woods, Ross B. McConnell, Jr., and Vincent H. McConnell; 2 great grandchildren, Clayton Henry Gilstrap and Hampton C. Woods; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

As a young woman, Ms. Bertie began her career at Purdy’s Drug Store in Ridgeland, SC and later worked for Tanner’s Pharmacy for many years. She was married in March of 1955 and left the pharmaceutical business to devote her life to homemaking and the care of her children and grandchildren. Her family lived in Jacksonville, FL for several years before settling in Greenville, SC. Ms. Bertie was quite fond of gardening and had an exquisite yard at her upstate home. She enjoyed “cutting a rug” on the dance floor, decorating for the holidays, as well as cooking. Ms. Bertie’s home was always welcome to visitors, and she always enjoyed family gatherings. Her Apple Cake was always a coveted dessert, and only she could make it just right. Her love, devotion, hospitality, and excellent recipes will be affectionately remembered by family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the Meyer Center for Special Children, 1132 Rutherford Rd., Greenville, SC 29609. This United Way organization was founded by Ms. Bertie’s favorite doctor and friend, the late Dr. Leslie C. Meyer.

A private service will be held for family and close friends in her hometown, Ridgeland, SC.
