Rev. John Charles Smith, 85, husband of Shirley Joan Stargel Smith for 67 years, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 3, 2020.
Rev. Smith was born in Piedmont to the late Raymond Leroy Smith and Bertha Inez Presley Smith. With Joan by his side, he served as a Pastor and soldier for God at Pentecostal Holiness and Church of God ministries throughout South Carolina and Texas. He was “the best father in the world.” Rev. Smith was a loving husband, a devoted son, and a wonderful Papa “J” to his grandkids. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Word of Life Ministries.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Rhonda Dill and husband Gervase, and Rene McElhannon; a son, Bishop John Smith Jr. and wife Jeanie; a brother, Bill Smith; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Jack Smith, Dewey Smith, and Larry Smith.
The family will receive friends between 12:30 – 1:45 pm Thursday at Word of Life Ministries. A Funeral Service will follow at 2 pm. Burial, with Military Honors, will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
