I attended Mauldin High with Lane. I always knew I could've counted on him to make me smile. High school wasn’t always easy for me due to personal struggles but Lane was a bright spot in my day during the class we shared senior year. He had a special way of making everyone feel seen.

I am sorry for the loss of Lane. I have only recently learned of his passing as I left South Carolina after 2014.
Lane and I attended high school together, and he was always kind to me. He had a great sense of humor and would often make me smile with his goofy impressions in Mrs. Roberts' class or his witty remarks to the teachers. I never saw him being mean to anyone and he always made sure to include everyone.
Please accept my deepest condolences.

I wasn’t super close to Lane, I went to Mauldin with him and also USC and we ended up being in the same friend group. He was always smiling and friendly.
One of my favorite memories is from high school. He would randomly pop into French classes during the day to tell Mme. Robert it was his birthday. (He did this several times a year) and she would always excitedly wish him a happy birthday every time.
Sending my love to the family in this trying time.

I was a student of Lane’s and he was hands down the greatest professor I had the honor of being taught from. A classmate and I had the honor to invite him to a professor dinner where we got to get to know each other beyond religion and the class he taught. He was genuinely the most caring man and I know he will be missed by everyone he knew. Rest In Peace.

I had the privilege of having Lane as a professor at UGA my freshman year. He was by far the most amazing and friendly professor I have ever had. He was kind, patient, and thoughtful. I am so thankful to have known him.

We are so sorry that Lane passed away from cancer. He was so young & had so much to offer the world. Sometimes, I don't understand why things happen the way they do, but I keep faith in God to support us & see us through difficult times. I am so glad we had the good fortune to know Lane most of his life & had the opportunity to teach him in Cherub Choir at Advent. He was such a sweet, loving boy. He'd get a twinkle in his eyes, & I knew he was happy & getting ready to surprise me with something,. He especially liked the homemade drums we used to play Little Drummer Boy at Christmas. We made them out of big coffee cans, & he loved to bang with all his might on them as he sang. I will always cherish memories of him.

Bismillah
This is Kenneth Honerkamp with whom Lane has been working over the last five years on first his MA and now his PhD. We traveled to Morocco together with other students for research and Arabic studies. Lane was a true leader among the students of our group and helped everyone get beyond and prosper within the new cultural environment they were encountering there. I cannot tell you how many people in Morocco have been in contact with me when they heard our news of Lane's moving beyond this domain of give and take to the luminous realms of Divine grace and mercy. Everyone that ever met Lane remembers him as a singular entity that brightened everyone's day. Even the farmers in the Urieka Valley that met him were saddened at our news, and upon hearing that God's decree had been fulfilled said, Inna Lillahl wa inna ilayhi raji'un - Truly we are God's alone and truly to Him we return. Peace and Blessing dear brother, give my greetings to Ibn Ajiba and Ibn Abbad when you see them.
Dr. Honerkamp

To know him is to love him. I was lucky enough to go to middle and high school with Lane and we grew up in the same church. Although Lane and I hadn’t seen each other much since high school, whenever I did get to see him, it was like nothing had changed. I am so thankful I got to grow up with him. He was my “partner in crime” when we were little. We use to joke and tell people that we were twins... we had the same last name and matching bowl cuts to prove it. His favorite color was green when we were little and I tried to convince myself that green was my favorite color too even though I secretly liked blue. I admire the way he could make anyone feel valued and comfortable with who they were. He was one of the funniest, goofiest guys I knew and we are all better for knowing him. He will always be remembered. Praying for his family and friends.

I graduated from Mauldin High in 2009, a year before Lane. I was furious at my parents at that time because they forced me to take 7 classes my senior year even though, I could’ve left after 4th period. I decided to continue taking French during my 5th period and I had the absolute honor of being in the same room as Lane! That class was literally the highlight of my senior year and Lane was a big reason for that! He would make the entire room laugh! We would all make fun of Ms. Robert and just have a really fun time! After high school, I would again see Lane from time to time around USC campus! What I loved about Lane is that no matter how much time would pass, this man would always acknowledge you and just have a big smile on his face and approach you! He was an incredibly kind soul and I feel fortunate enough to say that I got to see him a few months ago in Columbia when USC played against Florida. I saw him at a rooftop bar and once again, big Ol smile on his face, yelling out “Jaime”! Lane, if you can do me a favor and the next time we see each other again, please have that same positive energy and smile! I love you, Lane.

I knew Lane throughout highschool. Even though we weren't close then, he was always a light in the dark. He was kind, light-hearted, and always lit up the room. The world is a darker place without his quick wit and infectious laughter. My condolences to his family and all our friends - Mauldin High class of 2010.

I had the honor of being one of Lane's nurses. Throughout his entire treatment, he never forgot to say "Thank you so much ". I'll never forget the time he told me he was going to get me some socks to match my colorful nursing shoes.
I know he's at home with our Savior, Jesus Christ. My heart goes out to his entire family.

Lane was one of my closest friends through elementary school. We always had the best of times going to the skate park, playing video games, and just goofing off in our little friend group that also included Sidney and Matt. Lane was always the most genuine, accepting guy and probably the most well liked person in the entire class. We haven't spoken in several years, but I was glad to be one of his close friends for a period of our lives. Lane introduced me to so much great music during our friendship and that definitely has a lot to do with why I care so much about music today. Lane was just a great friend and always so funny and a joy to be around. Prayers for Mrs. Donna and the whole family.

Ironically, Lane and I become closer after he left Columbia to attend graduate school in Athens GA. I’m so glad we got to visit each other so often after he left, but still wish it could have been more frequent. He was always good for running around downtown Columbia or Athens, playing board games, drinking good beer, and finding the humor in everything. He will be dearly missed.
