Obituary of Lee Edward Coulter

Lee Edward Coulter, 79, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Mr. Coulter was born in Chicago Heights, IL to the late Wallace James Coulter and Lorraine Elizabeth Dahl Coulter. Lee was also fondly remembered by the nicknames “Butch” and “Baby Bull”. Although born in IL, Lee grew up in Red Bank, TN. During his youth, Lee boxed, winning a Golden Glove, and played basketball and baseball any chance he could get. He was an alumnus of Carson Newman University and member of the 1965 Small College National Baseball Championship team. Lee was a Vietnam veteran, joining U.S. Marine Corps in August 1965 and attained the rank of captain. He was subsequently recruited by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS), then known as NIS, and retired after 23 years. Special Agent Coulter was known for his intuitive hunches and attention to detail when working and documenting cases. He continued to enjoy competitive athletics, organizing league events at NCIS offices. He enjoyed golfing, often participating in charity tournaments. Lee was an avid Tennessee Volunteers football fan and Atlanta Braves baseball fan. During his final hours, the Atlanta Braves game was playing in the background and the Braves went on to win the game. Surviving are his son, Chris Coulter and granddaughter, Sophie Coulter; stepson, Greg Coulter; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Ellis Coulter, his twin sister, Gayle Johnson and sister, Suzanne Harris. Services with military honors, will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, TN on Thursday, April 20, at 1:00 PM.
